We provide a range of activities for the health and social benefit of all the community but in particular those who are disadvantaged and/or from minority communities. Even though we are based in Westminster we also regularly deliver programmes in Wandsworth and Kensington & Chelsea.
Sport4Health CIO is a registered charity (No. 1207371). It was originally established in 2006 as a Community Interest Company (CIC), which was the most appropriate legal form at the time. The CIC structure allowed us to operate as a company—trading and selling services—while also pursuing charitable objectives.
One key feature of CICs is that the Directors of these companies, which are registered as companies limited by guarantee, cannot take "profits" from the organisation. Instead, any profits must be reinvested to support charitable activities. However, over time, CICs have seen a decrease in support from charitable funders, especially after the introduction of Charitable Incorporated Organisations (CIOs). A CIO allows an organisation to be both a registered charity and a trading entity, with all its activities being focused on charitable purposes.
In early 2024, we applied to become a CIO and were granted approval on 8th March 2024. As part of this transition, we successfully transferred all funds and assets to the new charity (with the approval of our funders and donors) in order to dissolve the CIC. We now operate solely as a CIO—a registered charity—with a skilled and experienced board of trustees (see Our Team) who are committed to continuing our mission and doing the best we can for you.
Our charitable objects are as follows:
- To provide or assist in providing facilities and services for sport, recreation, or other leisure time occupation for people who need such facilities due to their disability, youth, age, infirmity, poverty, or social and economic circumstances. This is aimed at improving their conditions of life and promoting social welfare for the public in general.
- To advance the education of young people under the age of 25 in sports-related job skills.
This is an exciting new chapter for Sport4Health, building upon more than 17 years of supporting disadvantaged individuals from marginalised communities to achieve better health and wellbeing. We are grateful to all our funders and donors for their support over the past 17 years, and we hope that you—and others—will continue to support our work as we embark on this new journey as a charity.
